"To Build a Swing" (Hafiz)

In an effort to continue to provide recovery tools, inspiring poems/writings and videos that I hope will make a difference, I am sharing a poem that Terri,a fellow NAMI "Family to Family" facilitator, emailed me. I also recommend you read more of Hafiz's great poems for inspiration.

You carry
All the ingredients
To turn your life into a nightmare --
Don't mix them!

You have all the genius
To build a swing in your backyard
For God.

That sounds
Like a hell of a lot more fun.
Let's start laughing, drawing blueprints,
Gathering our talented friends.

I will help you
With my divine lyre and drum.

Will sing a thousand words
You can take into your hands,
Like golden saws,
Silver hammers,

Polished teakwood,
Strong silk rope,

You carry all the ingredients
To turn your existence into joy,

Mix them, mix

from The Gift, Poems by Hafiz, translated by Daniel Ladinsky, 1999, Penguin, London
In my opinion, this poem echo's the teachings of Don Ruiz. It is my choice on how I want to live my life despite whatever ingredients that come my way. I can choose joy, love and happiness or anger, fear and sadness. Hope you enjoyed the poem and thank you Terry for sharing.
